In late March he hosted the inaugural HV3 Foundation high school golf tournament at Cramer Mountain Country Club, which involved ten teams, including his alma mater Forestview High. "We didn't play in tournaments like this when I was in high school so I'm trying to do it," Varner told the Gaston Gazette, "I'm so happy to be able to do it in Gaston County.
