T he CGA has a new USGA champion after Kevin O'Con- nell (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Brett Boner (Charlotte, N.C.) at the USGA Mid-Amateur held at Charlotte Country Club and Carolina Golf Club. Akshay Bhatia (Wake Forest, N.C.) became the first back-to- back winner of the Boys Junior PGA Championship. Also of special note, he a shot 61 en route to winning the same tournament last year. Currently, Bhatia is 28th in the World Amateur rankings. Pretty good for a 16-year-old! The CGA crowned many Carolinas champions this year includ - ing, in the Men's Division, Drayton Stewart (Junior), Joshua Martin (Amateur), John Pitt (Mid-Am), Preston Edmondson (Senior) and winner of three CGA Championships in 2018, Paul Simson (Super Senior). Simson now holds 36 total CGA titles. In the Women's Division, our Carolinas Champions are Maria Atwood (Junior), Anna Redding (Amateur) and Pat Brogden (Senior). Redding is 46th in the World Amateur rankings. The CGA can point with pride to four junior alumni who now rank inside the world top 50 including Dustin Johnson (#3), Webb Simpson (#19), Kevin Kisner (#34), and on the Women's World Golf Rankings, Austin Ernst (#34). This issue of the Carolinas Golf Magazine will be highlighting the journey of Lauren Stephenson from CGA junior golf to the LPGA. We had a great 2018, but 2019 brings the CGA an unprecedented opportunity to host four USGA National Championships. The USGA only has 14 events per year and as far as I know, no golf association has ever hosted four championships in a single year. This will be a great time to compete, spectate and/or volunteer. • U.S. Women's Open (Country Club of Charleston) • U.S. Women's Senior Open (Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club) • U.S. Amateur (Pinehurst Country Club) • U.S. Senior Amateur (Old Chatham Golf Club) The 10th Carolinas Young Amateur to be held January 3-4 2019 at Pinewild Country Club could very well be the first championship conducted under the new 2019 Rules of Golf. Another huge change comes from a very intense rewrite of the Rules of Golf. This issue will go into great detail in a separate article. Recently, I had the pleasure of playing in the Reunion Pro-Am Foundation event on the Mike Smith (Secretary of CGA Execu- tive Board) team which also included Larry McWane and Dave Hampton. These guys live and breathe golf rules. For them it's not enough to attend all the CGA and USGA seminars; they also hold separate weekly study sessions in Pinehurst. You will see them and many other dedicated volunteers at many tournaments in the Carolinas ... A huge thank you for your dedication and help! Last issue, I put out the call for information on a 1915 executive committee member and still haven't received any help in solving the mystery of "Who is Pop Rivers?" In closing, I would like to thank the golfing community for all the help and support making the Carolinas the best in golf. To our dedicated staff, volunteers, golfers, with a special shout-out to the SCGA, WSCGA and the Carolinas PGA: A GIANT Thank You! Always remember: Golf is fun! Have a great 2019!
